The Nissan Versa 2010

In my recent travels I was given something other than a Ford model rental car and instead a new Nissan Versa.  I had no idea what I was in for when I climbed into this sleek little black egg-shaped car (reminded me of a tiny Murano) but it surprised me.

The 2010 model has four versions for this hatchback car ranging in price from just under $10k to over $16k. It gets 28 city mpg and 34 highway mpg's, which is reasonable and proved to be true while I drove it for just under a week.  My model was a 1.8 S hatchback but it also comes in a Sedan version as does the 1.6 model and the 1.8 SL.  I was immediately surprised by what this hatchback has to offer.  It seats five but would be better suited for four.  It has zip to it with its 122-hp engine and offers a smoother ride than any of the previous cars in the same size I have driven as of late.  This hatchback also comes with 15" wheel covers, air conditioning, AM/FM/CD audio system, an auxiliary audio input jack, 2 dual power body-color outside mirrors, rear intermittent windshield wiper with washer (hatchback only) and 60/40 split fold-down rear seats (hatchback only).

Here's the thing- I don't like hatchbacks typically.  The look and smallness of them has always made me feel crowded interior-wise and hasn't offered a fun drive. It's practicality was lost on me as well.  I didn't feel this way even once when I drove the Versa.  It offered great gas mileage, I fueled up once all week.  Had power enough to easily pass others on the highway and when I needed some get up and go. It offered comfort when going over pesky speed bumps in office complexes too.  I didn't feel that jolt or hard bounce I typically do when driving other sedans and small vehicles.  The sound system was adequate.  There was nothing that stood out to me in this category but that isn't something this model or car is known for.  It was a fun little ride that had me walking away from it impressed and wishing I had more time with it.  It think it makes a great starter car, it's perfect for commuting and for those who need some storage but don't want a big vehicle.  In fact, if I had it as a rental again I would be quite happy and wouldn't mind testing out the sedan option as well. It's also a 2009 Safety winner and obtained good reviews from both Car and Driver and Consumer Reports.
