Smartipants Cloth Diapers

With two kids and another one on the way we have tried almost every diaper out there.  From the classic disposable brands that have been around for decades to the hybrid brand diapers and now cloth.  Smartipants cloth diapers recently sent me a yellow one to try out. Being new to cloth but wanting to explore it as a possibility for this next child I was excited to test the Smartipants design.

Smartipants ($14.95 single, $39.95 set of three)  is a fantastic  reusable diaper for your baby’s bottom. Smartipants diapers can be washed and reused and are made from high performance fabrics that will keep baby’s skin dry and rash free. They adjust (through the use of snaps) to fit babies from around 7 to 35 lbs. meaning that as your baby grows so does their diaper.  I love this idea. Even the hybrid diapers come in three sizes versus one size fits most.

These diapers are smart and unique in that they are the only reusable diapers made 100% in the USA. Made in their own facility in Los Angeles the unique design is the “smart sleeve” that holds an absorbent insert in place while baby wears the diaper. It automatically separates itself from the diaper during the laundering process to get twice as clean and dry in half the time.  It also means that I only had to handle the diapers when they were clean and could immediately place wet or dirty diapers into the diaper pail to wash.  They clean easily and actually wear quite well.  They are soft outside and inside and my daughter seemed to like wearing them more than a disposable and just as much as her typical hybrid diaper.  Plus, the cute factor of the Smartipants diaper cannot be denied.  She looked adorable in just her yellow Smartipants and she knew it.

The Smartipants company recommends number of diapers for full time diapering from birth to potty learning to be 24 Smartipants. You can purchase these directly from their website at www.smartipants.com for around $300.00. Disposables are about $40-50 a case and you could use up to 1500 a year.  Hybrids are the same price for the inserts plus the estimated $300 up front for various sizes in outside liners.  Purchasing reusable Smartipants diapers will save you $3,000 over the cost of disposables. I only wish inserts weren't sold seperately ($19.95, 10-pack)

I had no issues cleaning this diaper.  No leaking problems either. I tried it out during the day and overnight and had great results. I was quiet pleased with Smartipants.  The varying snaps that grow with baby sold me too.  If my spouse was on board I would pick up a whole bunch of Smartipants in a second.  Unfortunately, he is not. Reusable diapers (the washing/ick factor gets him each time) are not his thing and if I want any sort of help with the diapering of the babies I cannot go this route.
