Down at the Sea Hotel

Mellow, soulful and with a bit of country twang Down at the Sea Hotel is a 14 track CD of moving lullabies. Great songwriters (Billy Joel, Carole King, Tom Waits, etc) and singers (Lynn Miles, Mary Chapin Carpenter and the Wailin’ Jennys to name a few) come together to create a soft soothing compilation of songs for you and your child. The song ‘Child of Mine’, a particular favorite of mine, is written from a parent’s point of view. Its moving word about seeing the world through your child’s eyes is touching and I love to sing it to my daughter.

Down at the Sea Hotel is whimsical yet calming. I play it in our house pre or post-nap which seems to help in easing the grumpiness in our house. Life’s small pleasures and subtleties are all right here in each song. We listen to the sea creatures settle down for a night of rest as the songs play out. The CD’s cover art is colorful and playful. My daughter loves to look at the artwork and pick out the different sea creatures and animals. She repeatedly asks to listen to this CD which is rare. Each time it ends she asks for me to play it again. I know we will be listening to this CD for a long time to come.

Two-time Grammy nominee Greg Brown wrote the title song that also is a story with illustrations by Mireille Levert. While I did not get to view the book I know the illustrations are pleasing to the eye. You can purchase the CD alone (14.98) or the book and CD combo (22.95) which is a 40-page hardcover book with beautiful illustrations. Consider this a great baby shower gift for a friend who is expecting or as a congratulations on your new baby gift. These songs can soothe even a tired parents nerves.
