REphase D-White (Dermal Whitening)

Available in Europe since 2006 REphase D-White works for all skin tones and is a a progressive skin-lightening cream.  It claims to "effectively and safely removes unsightly skin discolorations that comes with age and sun exposure."  Using the active ingredient Arbutin*, not Hydroquinone, which is a plus, it can remove hyperpigmentation by decreaseing melanin production. D-White is a powerful, targeting spot treatment that can fade dark spots from the areas like your face, hands, arms and shoulders that are often most exposed to the sun.  With ongoing use, your skin can be more even-toned and protected from future sun abuse.

I tried D-White (30 ml, $60) for a few weeks, rubbing it into the tops of my shoulders each morning post-shower.  I also applied it to three dark spots on my face.  I'm pale and prone to freckles that only lighten slightly in the winter months and then come roaring back each spring and summer despite daily SPF.  Those three dark spots are larger than the average freckle and I want them gone.  They look more like age spots if you ask me.  After about a week I noticed that my shoulder spots had faded just a bit.  Two more weeks and they seemed to have faded a bit more, though still there.  The spots on my face initially seemed to fade a small bit as well but then didn't budge. They are darker than the freckles on my shoulders and I think that I needed to apply the D-White twice a day to them and for a longer period of time to see more results.  I might have to begin using it again just on the age spots on my face twice a day to see if results are better.  Sixty days of treatment is the norm to see real results.

D-White is doctor-developed and has been tested in three university studies.  Dermal White also provides UVA/UVB protection to prevent future age spots and dark marks from appearing, another bonus.  I like the fact that it does not contain Hydorquinone which I will not allow in my home much less on my body on a regular basis.  It does seem to even out skin tone but I think real results are slow in coming.  A typical jar lasts 3-4 months and that is when results my be more forthcoming.  If dark spots, freckles and uneven skin tone are a problem for you D-White is worth trying.  It really can reduce the signs of aging with prolonged use.  I think it is great for the chest area as well as the face.  Results are not instantaneous but those dark spots were not either.

*Arbutin a naturally occuring derivative of hydroquinone found in the leaves of cranberry, bearberry, and blueberry shrubs, most types of pears, and many other plants. Arbutin may inhibit melanogenesis by affecting tyrosinase activity. Arbutin has been used in the treatment of disorders of hyperpigmentation such as postinflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by acne, trauma, allergic reactions, infections, injuries, phototoxic reactions, reactions to medications, reactions to cosmetics, and inflammatory diseases. Arbutin concentration protocols for skin whitening have not yet been established. Low concentrations have no effect, while high concentrations of about 5% or more can be as irritating as Hydroquinone and may potentially result in unexpected hyperpigmentation (darkening). Arbutin is a safe skin agent for external use which does not have the toxicity, stimulation, unpleasant odor or side effect such as Hydroqinone.  Arbutin is split into glucose (a sugar) and hydroquinone. Hydroquinone combines with glucuronic acid and this compound is excreted in the urine. If the urine is alkaline (pH 8), hydroquinone is unbound and released in the urinary tract where it exhibits a bacteria killing effect. If the urine is not alkaline, hydroquinone remains bound and is inactive. The encapsulation of Arbutin constitute a delivery system to potentialize the effect in time. It is a way to incorporate the hydrophilic Arbutin in lipophilic media. Arbutin give three main properties; Whitening effects, anti- age effect and UVB/ UVC filter .

I hate to burst your bubble but Arbutin is still hydroquinone. It still carries the same risks as hydroquinone.

Paula,
Thank you for forcing me to more research into Arbutin, which I have added into the review. By no means am I saying this product is 100% natural or safe but Arbutin is not quite the same as hydroquinone.
