Mama Mirabelle's Home Movies

Back in September PBS KIDS launched their newest show, “Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies, starring Vanessa Williams as Mama a loving, sassy, and full of fun elephant. The show features exciting and enthralling animation with amazing real life wildlife movies from National Geographic and the BBC included throughout each episode.

Each episode has a problem to solve and something to learn. All the animals gather around Mama Mirabelle to watch home movies of themselves and other animals that inhabit the world. Through watching Mama’s home movies the questions are answered and problems are solved. It is truly a fun and captivating show to watch. The four episodes I viewed (repeatedly ) had us on a journey through stunning coral reefs, watching Cliff Swallows build their nests on high, and viewing animals in that live in the ground. While it is intended for pre-schooler’s my 20 month-old daughter absolutely loves it! She loves the catchy theme song that bounces around in my head all day and seeing and learning all the different animals whether they are real or animated.

The point of Mama Mirabelle’s show is to teach kids their place in the world and awareness of all that surrounds them. The show does this by showing the places that all the animals inhabit and giving insight and understanding into animal customs and behavior. This first time effort of National Geographic and PBS is sure to be a hit! I truly enjoy watching the episodes with my daughter, singing the songs, and pointing out the different animals and places they live. She loves the brightly colored animation especially Max the know- it- all Cheetah. The curiosity of the animals matches that of my daughters making it a truly delightful learning experience. The music, original African and world-inspired pieces, is lively and makes my daughter get up and dance around while she watches the program. This show is by far one of the best I’ve seen in a long time and one that I hope others begin to watch with their children.

Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies is an impeccable combination of beautiful animation and the incredible wildlife footage National Geographic has on file. There’s even an interactive website available full of games, more animation, music and more all waiting for you and your child to explore online so check it out today and find your local listings for this terrific show.
